Lie
down with a pillow under your right shoulder. Place your right arm behind your head.
Use the finger pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the
right breast.
Press
firmly enough to know how your breast feels. If you are not sure how hard to press, ask
your doctor during your next visit..
Move around your breast in the same way, either up and down, or around the wedge, as long
as you do it the same way every month. Go over the entire breast area, and remember how
your breast feels from one month to another.
Repeat the exam on your left breast, using the finger pads of the right hand.
While taking your shower, repeat the same exam as for the
Lying Down Exam, one arm behind your head, using soapy hands to feel your breasts, and
particularly the upper and outer part, where about half of breast cancers are found.
Standing in front of a mirror, check for any change in the
way your breasts look, redness, swelling, changes in the nipple or dimpling of the skin..
