Back
to HeartBurn
Heartburn, also called acid
indigestion, is caused by the return of the stomach contents back up into your mouth,
through the esophagus.
To minimize heartburn, follow these few steps:
Eat small frequent
meals.
Limit foods and
drinks that tend to trigger heartburn. Common irritants include coffee, alcohol, fatty
foods, chocolate, peppermint, citrus fruits and juices and tomato products.
Wear loose fitting
clothing or loosen your belt. Tight clothing increases pressure on the stomach.
Eat your last meal
preferably 2-3 hours before lying down. This allows the stomach to partially empty and
allows the amount of acid present in the stomach to decrease.
Elevate the head of
your bed 6 inches. This takes advantage of gravity to minimize the washing of stomach
contents into the esophagus.
Do not smoke.
Nicotine leads to heartburn.
If you still suffer from heartburn, or if it is accompanied
by shortness of breath, or vomiting, make an Appointment
to see your doctor immediately
